Lights, Camera, Action!
Master welder Tom Oppelt of Wallingford was recently featured in a special video to demonstrate how to fabricate steel forms to make life-saving concrete water filters.
This video, produced by several professors at Yale University, will be distributed worldwide and over the internet to assist water purification projects for the very poor.
Last summer, Tom traveled with the Wallingford DR Mission Team to La Romana to build two steel molds for the Good Samaritan Hospital. These steel forms produced several sample concrete water filters and will be the basis for a clean water project, in conjunction with Rotary International, in the La Romana area.
The goal of these forms will be to mass produce concrete biosand water filters to be used by poor families who lack clean water. These filters, built under the specifications of the CAWST organization, provide water that is 99% pure.
These concrete filters will cost only $50 US to manufacture and install, and last for 25 years with very litte maintenance! If interested in sponsoring biosand water filters for the poor in La Romana, please contact John Powers or call the church office at 203-269-4796. |
