Getting the opportunity to attend a DRMT trip is truly a life changing experience, an experience that stays with you forever. Â
This was my second mission trip, both with the DRMT. After my first trip this past January, I knew with no doubt in my mind that I needed to come back. The work we do, connections we make, and amazing people we meet in the bateyes are impossible to forget.Â
This past week, I spent most of my time in the bateyes with the construction team. We completed multiple projects, such as making new sidewalk in between houses. I also had the chance to help out with daily food distribution to hand out basic essentials for those living in the bateyes.
A highlight of my trip was spending time with the kids. As soon the bus arrived everyday you are welcomed by smiles ear to ear and open arms ready to give you the biggest hug. These kids do not expect much, just love and attention. They appreciate the little things. Whether it is you giving them a coloring page, painting their nails, or dancing, they give you endless love in return.Â
A special moment for me was going to the medical clinic for the first time. I got the chance to take patients blood pressure and temperature, which gave me the opportunity to connect one on one with individuals.
Even if the patient was hurting inside, they knew they were in the hands of God and were given reassurance from people in the clinic that we were there to help them. Being able to help out in the medial clinic- so personal and full of care- was a moving experience. My time spent in the med clinic reminded me how important it is to always keep a smile on your face.Â
After each day my heart was so full. Looking back on photos and replaying memories in my head, I couldn't stop smiling. I felt so good that I was able to make the people in the bateyes feel appreciated, loved, and cared for.
Most importantly, this journey truly brought me so much closer to God. Knowing I am serving in His name and doing His work filled me with peace.
Leaving La Romana is not easy - the happiness I feel their is like no other. But I will be back next year for another mission trip ready to give all of my love to the people that need it most.Â
